A Study on Functional Evaluation in Stroke Patients -By Scores of Modified Barthel Index and PULSES Profile-

Abstract
This study was conducted from August 1990 to March 1991 on the 40 stroke patients who were admitted to K Medical center and received rehabilitation treatment.
The objective of the study was to evaluate the functional status of daily activities and therapeutic effect of rehabilitation by Modified Barthel Index and. PULSES Profile when first requested of rehabilitation treatment (T1), at 2 weeks after
rehabilitation treatment (T2), at discharge (T3) and at the time of ambulatory treatment 2weeks after discharge (T4).
@ES The results are as follows:
@EN 1. 21 subjects(52.5%) were male, 19 subjects(47.5%) were female, and the age ranged from 19 to 70 with an average of 52.7.
2. By the classification of diagnosis, 21 subjects(52.5%) had cerebral hemorrhage, 8 subjects(20.0%) had cerebral thrombosis, 6 subjects(15.0%) had cerebral embolism, and 5 subjects(12.5%) had cerebral infarction.
3. The Barthel Index scores were 35.7, 54.5, 71.8, 88.7 on average at T1, T2, T3, T4 respectively. The PULSES score were 16.4, 13.7, 11.4, 8.7 on average at T1, T2, T3, T4 respectively.
4. When patients were stratified to 3 groups by age, the subjects aged 39 or less had highest functional status, and the subjects aged 60 or over had lowest functional status.
5. When patients were stratified by the site of paralysis, the function of those with left paralysis was better than that of those with right paralysis.
6. According to the Barthel Index and the PULSES scores by the severity of disability, the disability decreased at discharge.
7. The Pearson's correlation coefficient between the Barthel Index score and the PULSES scores was -0.7991(P<0.001) at T1 and -0.8986(P<0.001)at T3 respectively. Showing inverse correlation.
